Tourism is currently at its peak in Thailand and it expected to rise even more in the coming years. This is good news for the military junta that is currently ruling the country because of the revenue that they are receiving from various attractions and accommodations such as spa resort in Kata beach but the same cannot be said when it comes to the locals and the nation’s environment.
According to a report by the Financial Times, it is expected that the number of tourists will increase up to 60 million every year until 2030. This number is twice the number of tourists, 32.6 million, came to the country last year. As the number of visitors increases, it is expected that a strain will be subjected to the local infrastructure of Thailand including motorways and airports.
In the last decade, the country has seen a steady increase of number of tourists from European countries. Last year, there are about one million British people who came to the Land of Smiles but the highest number of visitors came from countries such as Russia and China. In 2010, it was recorded that 15. 9 million Chinese tourists came to the country but last year, the number was up to 32.6 million. This is blamed partly to a film that was released in 2012 entitled Lost in Thailand. This movie is very popular and is about road trip.
Despite the fact that the visa upon arrival is more expensive than before, the number of tourists from China continues to rise. The state of the politics and the army in the country does not deter the visitors from coming as well. Other unfortunate incident such as bombing and deaths does not in any way affect the tourism in the country.
It is common knowledge that Thailand has a weak economy and it is currently relying heavily on the dollars that tourism is bringing in. according to an economist in Thailand, KiatipongAriyapruchya, tourists continue to flood various attractions in Phuket, Bangkok and Chang Mai as well as stay in spa resort in Kata beach but the fact remains that there are no expansions being done on the infrastructure of the country. This is very important in order for sustainable tourism to flourish in the country.
